Sound Fundamentals for Theatre training course (London - April 2026)

Sound Fundamentals for Theatre has become the industry's de facto theatre sound training programme, helping to prepare technical theatre engineers and theatre sound students for careers in live entertainment.

The four day course combines essential theory with practical skills, catering for a wide cross-section of skill levels. Students are typically drawn from the UK's leading drama schools, as well as freelancers and corporate sector technicians.

Orbital's Head of Education, Mike Thacker is supported by a team of other highly experienced educators and industry leading sound designers, operators and engineers, all of which cements an invaluable, practical and hands on educational week.

Over the 4 days, students are also given the opportunity to try out some of the latest audio equipment, with participation from leading brands such as Yamaha Commercial Audio, Shure, d&b audiotechnik, Nexo, Nemesis Research, Q-Lab and DiGiCo.

Our hugely successful two day 'Mixing for Musicals' training course will run on February 11th & 12th 2026.

Mixing for Musicals is far, far more than just another "this is how a mixing desk works" workshop - Mixing for Musicals participant's are taken through every stage of the process from the rehearsal room to setting up a desk in its base state, including the theory, introduction to why line-by-line mixing is so important, and what happens when you don't do it.

Hands-on experience is an essential aspect of the course, which includes the opportunity to talk in depth to the sound team of current West End shows.

Held at our purpose-built training rooms, programming suite & sound studio in Brixton, London the course focuses on the practical skills and theory behind best-practice FOH mixing requirements for modern musicals.

The students experience all the essential tasks associated with sound operating excellence, from basic mixing theory to working with the latest digital mixing technology.

Sound is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in theatre, and the sound team are key to the smooth delivery of this curious art form.

This practical technical course is designed for anyone who wants to learn how to run sound for live performance, whether you’re stepping into your first role as a sound technician or looking to build confidence in a production environment.

Across the course we’ll cover the core skills needed to operate sound in a theatre setting, from prep to performance. You’ll learn how to set up and run a modern digital mixing desk, including signal flow, patching, gain structure, EQ basics, routing, control groups and how to create a clean, reliable system that can survive the pressures of a live show. We’ll also explore QLab, teaching you how to build and organise a cue list, trigger cues safely, and manage sound playback with confidence. You’ll be guided through how to mark up a script properly for sound operation: identifying cues, writing clear notes, and developing the discipline of following the action of the show. We’ll also cover first-line troubleshooting, so you’re prepared to solve common problems quickly, from faulty cables and to radio dropouts and unexpected feedback. Radio mic handling will be included too, fitting radios, mic placement, basic backstage etiquette, and maintaining equipment during a run. By the end of the course you’ll have practical skills, real-world workflow, and the confidence to step into a theatre sound role and really start learning.

Please note that while preference will be given to applicants with a Midlands postcode, applications are welcomed from across the country. The course will be based at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and on this occasion, we are unable to offer any accommodation or travel subs.

Sound for Stage Managers training course (London - July 2026)

We are pleased to announce our brand-new course Sound For Stage Managers, after several years of research, pilots schemes and investigation.

Increasingly Stage Managers in the theatre world are expected to possess skills in multiple areas and are asked to work across departments - often without adequate preparation.

This course is tailored for Stage Management of all levels, touching upon the basic elements of theatre sound that may be required in their current or future job roles. "Sound For Stage Managers" covers the fundamentals of how

audio systems work, midi sound effects show control, an understanding of Qlab show audio programming, radio microphone and basic comms equipment techniques.

The aim is to give Stage Managers more confidence in understanding the "black arts" that lie within sound and communications - to empower them to not be fearful of cross-over roles and to enlighten them has two how best react when things don't go quite as originally planned!

"Sound For Stage Managers" will bring a higher level of understanding when operating sound for a play, for a Tech ASM covering sound roles on a musical, or the ever-increasing demands of Stage Management in the rehearsal room or live event.

Hands-on experience is an essential aspect with Orbital's training courses, which include guest experts and significant use of equipment guided by our experienced team.

Held at our purpose-built training rooms, warehouse & sound studio in Brixton, London the course focuses on the practical skills that are essential in modern theatre.
