In 1983 I began working as a sound engineer on West End musicals. I have since worked as a sound designer on various projects and also as a studio engineer for TER at studios such as Abbey Road and CTS.
I have also worked as a freelance Sound Supervisor at broadcast companies such as Sky (Osterley), ITV (London Studios), MTV Europe (Hawley Crescent), QVC, Nickelodeon and TV-am.
My introduction to sound began when I was working in repertory where I was taught the basics of recording and editing 1⁄4" show tapes. After a nine month ‘training’ period with Autograph, I was offered the position of Assistant Sound Engineer on ‘I’ at the Piccadilly Theatre. Subsequently I have progressed from mixing small shows to overseeing and managing large sound installations such as ‘Starlight Express’, ‘Joseph’, ‘Chitty’, ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘Ghost’.
In 1989 I was given the opportunity to assist Martin Levan on his design of ‘Aspects Of Love’ at the Prince of Wales.
In April 1989 I joined the National Theatre where in addition to designing and looking after shows in the Olivier Theatre I was also asked to design and install a new sound system for Stephen Sondheim’s award winning musical ‘Sunday In The Park With George’ which opened in the Lyttleton Theatre at the beginning of 1990. This was followed by a return to the Prince of Wales to mix ‘Aspects Of Love’.
In April 1991, I moved to the London Palladium to open Andrew Lloyd Webbers successful revival of ‘Joseph’ starring Jason Donovan and in the summer of 1993 I began working for TER as a freelance engineer. I was able to earn many album credits at Abbey Road and CTS studios for this label during the following 18 months.
Between1999-2008, I worked as a freelance sound supervisor and recordist for both broadcast and independent television production companies.
In 2008, having decided to return to live theatre, I was appointed sound No1 for the UK tour of ‘Chitty’. This was followed by a short European tour of ‘Cats’ (Cologne and Frankfurt) and directly after that I went to Berlin to open the German production of ‘Dirty Dancing’.
On leaving Berlin, I returned to the West End to join ‘Grease’ at the Piccadilly Theatre, followed by the international tour of ‘Mamma Mia’. This was followed by ‘The Lion King’ at The Lyceum Theatre’, ‘Billy Elliot’ at The Victoria Palace Theatre, ‘Ghost’ (Singapore), ‘Dirty Dancing’ (UK tour), and more recently ‘Ghost’ (Asia Tour) which ended in March 2017. Since then I have been working as a freelance sound engineer.
I am an experienced programmer of Digico desks (SD7T, SD10T) and fully conversant with QLab 3, Ableton Live, CSC, SFX and also Compass and XTA software.
