About Melanie

Melanie Wilson is a U.K based, multi-disciplinary sound artist, composer and performance maker. Her acclaimed work is founded on the contemporary interplay between sound art, experimental forms of composition, language, technology and live performance. Her work has been presented extensively in the U.K and internationally in theatre, opera and installation, and she is a long term composer collaborator with Katie Mitchell.

About Carolyn

Carolyn Downing is an award-winning sound designer working in a variety of fields including exhibitions, fashion, theatre and live events. Creativity and collaboration are at the heart of her work from initial concept development with fellow designers through to realisation with technical and project delivery teams.

Carolyn’s most recent work includes Goya And Munch: Modern Prophecies for Munchmuseet, Oslo; The Enfield Haunting currently playing in the West End; Life Of Pi productions created for London West End, Boston A.R.T, Broadway & UK tour, awarded a Tony in 2023 & nominated for an Olivier in 2022; The Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 Opening Ceremony performed at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham in July 2022; Jean Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure exhibition shown in NYC & Los Angeles; Ness a geo-located audio experience based on Robert McFarlane’s poetical work.

About Andrew

Andrew is an Olivier Award nominated and award-winning classically trained composer & producer and the co-founder of the electronica/world music act Bombay Dub Orchestra.

Andrew studied piano, clarinet and composition at the London College of Music under Dr Lloyd Webber and John McCabe. His music often fuses orchestral with folk and traditional elements of music from the project’s region and has scored many films in India including the National award- winning ‘Hamid’ by Aijaz Khan.

He is currently working on the 4th Bombay Dub Orchestra album as well as several feature films

About Mig 

Mig is a Senior Lecturer in lighting on the Theatre Production course at the Guildford School of Acting part of the University of Surrey, a trustee and Co Chair of the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT), and a trustee of the Backup Tech charity for the entertainment industry. She is a qualified Mental Health First Aid instructor and deliver courses via the ABTT. She has 20 years experience in live entertainment and theatre production.

He is sound associate for nyx electronic drone choir and one half of the soundscape/music duo skeleton woman.

About Ting

Ting is a sound designer, composer, and theatre maker. She likes to delve into the physical and psychological world within a story, and translate what she harvests into sound and music. Her work is often fluid and detailed, with naturalistic and treated sound effects, electronic and acoustic sounding textures and instruments weaved together.

Recent credits include Lyonesse (West End), Macbeth (International Tour/ETT), Black Superhero (Royal Court), The Beekeeper of Aleppo (UK Tour). She recently received the Stage Debut Award for Best Creative West End Debut for her sound design work on The Crucible (National Theatre/Gielgud Theatre).

A brief introduction to eco-acoustics, a far reaching field that is involved with understanding the social, cultural and ecological contexts of our sonic environment. We’ll touch on how scientists use sound as an ecological resource, how we listen across bigger-than-human time and spatial scales, and how artists in the field are changing the way we listen to the world.

About Anna

Anna makes things mostly using music, sound & words, they play the cello. They aim to create unique aural experiences that challenge audiences and invite people to listen to the world in new ways. They work across all forms including theatre, film, radio and installation, as well as performing and composing music for other musicians. Anna creates sound designs and compositions using a combination of foley, electronics, field recordings and live instruments (cello, guitar, keys, synths, clarinet, percussion) and vocals.

A deep dive into the world of comms for live events, with Audio and Comms Specialist Brew - James Henry Breward

Brew draws on his experience in UK theatre through global spectaculars, including music touring and sporting events deriving comms solutions of all shapes and sizes to explain the typical components of intercom systems, their fundamentals, along with some common pitfalls and the big secret that it is all just audio.

About Brew

Brew is a Live Event Production Sound Engineer, Comms Engineer and Consultant working on a wide range of live events and productions including ceremonies, musical theatre, corporate and rock and roll. These productions have been large events and tours, his work takes him all over the UK and into Europe and occasions to the rest of the world.

About Phil

After training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Phil spent the early part of his career working at Sound By Design Ltd. From 2000-2012 Phil also managed the Sound By Design team handling the BBC Proms live sound requirements.

In 2012 Phil went freelance and “Phil Wright Sound Limited” was founded. In this new role Phil has continued to work with artistes, producers and companies of repute to produce award winning productions around the globe.

In addition to live concert work Phil undertakes a significant amount of both pre and post-production in his studio in Surrey, UK. Phil also works with various artists providing carry-in recording and broadcast setups for radio & TV.

Phil has been working with a number of high end immersive and live streaming companies since 2020 to help artists, promoters and venues develop next generation content both in terms of live events and studio projects. This has culminated in the development of a Dolby Atmos mix studio with Immersive Specialists Sonosphere at Metropolis Studios, London which delivered the TPI Shortlisted "Live Production of the Year" - 5G Festival which has also now been shortlisted for the AV Awards 2022.

Phil works closely with a number of manufacturers, distributors and sound rental companies of repute collaborating on product development and design. Phil also spends time teaching the next generation of audio engineers on the Theatre Technology course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Academy of Contemporary Music, and through the Association of Sound Designers & Audio Engineering Society. About Lucy

Lucy (she/her) founded Tonic in 2011 with the ambition of creating a sea change in how theatre and the performing arts thought about and acted in regards to equality, diversity and inclusion. Over the subsequent years she created Tonic’s ground-breaking range of programmes, methodologies and tools which have enabled individuals and organisations to achieve deep and sustained change. Today Lucy heads Tonic’s work, overseeing strategy, managing key relationships and delivering projects, sessions and events alongside Tonic’s team of facilitators.

Lucy has 20 years’ experience working in theatre and, prior to creating Tonic, was an award-winning director.

About Amanda

Amanda worked as a full-time professional singer for six years before training in tax. She joined Ernst & Young’s Entertainment department, qualifying as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 1998. Since then she has combined freelance tax work with her continuing music work and family life.

Amanda’s tax practice assists UK sole traders and partnerships working in entertainment and media. She does some academic tax work, writing and marking exams for others wishing to brave the world of tax. She recently wrote an exam qualification for an overseas jurisdiction introducing a new tax regime.

Musically, Amanda’s preference is for contemporary classical music. She is happy with either a Stockhausen score or the latest tax legislation. HMRC’s Making Tax Digital project is currently at the top of her otherwise short list of worries for 2024.

Join Lewis Gibson for this 90 minute workshop exploring the exciting potential and parameters of Binaural sound making. Using Neumann KU100 dummy heads, location sound recordings, live foley sfx, found sounds and a dash of imagination, we will together create a short immersive radio piece and record it. ‘Sound and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.’ - Caliban.

Join Mark Cunningham in this hands on session looking at networks. Often key to a smooth production period we'll focus on creating robust networks and faultfinding, while covering design concepts including topology, redundancy and bandwidth.

About Mark

After 13 years as a freelance production bod specialising in sound, Mark spent 5 years as a teaching technician at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. There he specialised in sound and production IT, and completed a PGcert in teaching in Higher Education, where he focused on online study. Moving out of London and back to sunny Scarborough he's freelancing again, this time involving teaching and repairing electronics as well as his production work.
