An introduction to SketchUp

This online session will introduce participants to Sketchup. It will include a brief discussion of the key differences between Sketchup, AutoCAD and Vectorworks; and an overview of the versions and pricing of Sketchup. The live demonstration will cover the interface and most commonly used tools, plus good practices and workflows in model drawing. The session will include drawing up 3D models from pdf groundplans and exporting models to L-Acoustics Soundvision, Meyer MAPP 3D and D&B ArrayCalc. Questions are welcome throughout.

About Paul 

Following a career in theatre and live event production, Paul is now a lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. Paul specialises in teaching design realisation, technical drawing, health and safety for live events, and production management. His first book, examining the collaboration between creative and technical teams, is due for publication in 2025.

Paul began his career in the West End, working on the Pet Shop Boys musical ‘Closer to Heaven’ and Stephen Daldry’s National Theatre production of ‘An Inspector Calls’. Following this, Paul became a Project Manager for White Light. In this role Paul mostly worked on corporate projects and music festivals. A few years later Paul went back to theatre, as a freelance lighting designer, and later, production manager.

As a freelancer, Paul has worked with organisations including English Touring Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nottingham Playhouse, Longborough Festival Opera, Arts Council England, and Southwark Playhouse. Paul also enjoyed a long relationship as re-lighter and production manager for the Henri Oguike Dance Company, with whom he toured internationally for several years.

In between theatre work, Paul also undertook occasional live event jobs. These include the UK film premiers of Avengers Assemble and Pirates of the Caribbean; various product launches at Legoland; corporate parties at London Zoo; and managing the VIP lounge for the London 2012 Olympics.
