Gareth Fry leads us through the design process for Punchdrunk’s latest show, Viola’s Room, a sound-led headphone-based immersive experience. Discussing his collaboration with the directors Felix Barrett and Hector Harkness, recording Helena Bonham-Carter, creating the sound design and the bespoke technologies used to synchronise multiple mobile phone playback devices with lighting and automation systems, and multiple simultaneous audience pulses.

The show is nominated for a WhatsOnStage award for sound design.
TimeOut’s review described the

“extraordinary sound design: there is a sequence … that’s pretty much the best use of recorded music I’ve ever encountered in the theatre, and certainly the most cinematic.”

Participants will need headphones on a computer for the full effect. Tablets and phones don’t support stereo audio on Zoom.
